Sugaya Risako’s Profile

Sugaya Risako. January 2014

History

Sugaya successfully passed the  Hello! Project Kids Audition in 2002. She first appeared as a part of the 4KIDS group in the Mini Moni movie “Minimoni ja Movie Okashi na Daibouken!”.

She was one of the lead characters in the film “Hotaru no Hoshi”, as Hikari, a fragile elementary school student who, with the help of her caring teacher, has a chance to be momentarily reunited with her deceased mother and overcome her emotional problems. She also starred in the drama, Shonan Kawarayane Monogatari, in 2003.

That year also marked her first appearance on Kōhaku Uta Gassen during the 54th edition of the renowned NHK New Year program as one of Matsuura Aya’s backup dancers . In October 2003 Risako did a commercial for the Nihon Shokuniku Shōhi Sōgō Center .

Sugaya became part of the newly formed group Berryz Kobo in early 2004 along with eight other H!P Kids members. Inside the group she, along with fellow members Natsuyaki Miyabi, Tsugunaga Momoko and, to a certain extent, Kumai Yurina, is one of the central performers and lead vocalists.. She’s the youngest member of the group. She also participated in the band’s weekly radio show “Berryz Kobo Kiritsu! Rei! Chakuseki!” until Momoko’s solo radio show took over their time slot.

Like other Hello! Project members, she has also appeared in the Musume Dokyu! segments, namely episodes 39, 40, 54, 55, and 56.

From February 2006 until June 2006, Risako worked as a model for junior fashion magazine Pichi Lemon. In the 12th installment of the online show Hello! Pro Hour, Sugaya was interviewed by MC Goto Maki. She later re-appeared along Tsugunaga Momoko on the 20th and last episode of Hello! Pro Hour.

On October 12, 2006, Sugaya became the first member of Berryz Kobo and the youngest of all Hello! Project to release a solo photobook. This photobook, even prior to its release, met with mixed feelings both by Japanese and foreign fans. In an interveiw with Sanspo.com, she herself admitted to first having doubts regarding the photoshoot, but claims to have had a pleasant experience and hopes her fans enjoy the various facets of her personality.

At the 57th edition of Kōhaku Uta Gassen she once again took the stage as a backup dancer in Morning Musume’s performance of Aruiteru, along with the remaining members of Berryz Kobo, Country Musume and °C-ute on December 31, 2006.

In April, 2010, Risako started voice acting Ibu Himuro, the dark rival character of the anime “Gokujou Meccha Motte Iinchou”. Three months later it was announced her first solo single (alongside with a new one of the main character: Ogawa Mana as Kitagawa Mimi).

On November 12, 2010 it was announced that she and Ogawa Mana were nominated for Billboard JAPAN’s “Independent Artist of the Year 2010” award, due to their characters (Himuro Ibu and Kitagawa Mimi) on the anime “Gokujo Meccha Motte Iinchou”.

Risako released her E-Hello DVD, titled “Le Soliel” (Eng: The Sun) in Feburary 2011.

Sugaya, alongside fellow Berryz members Sudou Maasa, Kumai Yurina and Shimizu Saki and C-ute members Yajima Maimi, Saki Nakajima and Hagiwara Mai will be starring in the first adaption of the Cat’s Eye manga/anime. The group will also be forming a new group, Cat’s Eye 7, and singing the theme song for the stage play.

Trivia:

  • Is extremely good at Puyo Puyo, and has beaten Kajiwara from Music Fighter in the game.
  • Her best friend within Berryz Kobo was Ishimura Maiha until her graduation in 2005. It is rumored that she is still very close to her, although within the group she has gotten closer to Kumai Yurina.
  • At her initial Hello! Project Kids audition, she appeared with a broken arm.
  • She has a younger brother.
  • Hello! Project Kids Audition song: Minimoni. Hinamatsuri! Mini Moni
  • From ~Sono Subete no Ai ni~ her good subject is Art and her favorite food is Miso Noodle.
  • Once time, a boy of her class confessed his love to her in front of everyone in the classroom.
  • She said her favorite Berryz song is “Himitsu no U.ta.hi.me”.
  • Is good friends with Suzuki Airi from C-ute.
  • Was the first Hello! Project Kid to get a photobook.
  • Her favorite artist is UNJASH.
  • She has been noted to muddle out her name while introducing herself at times, from saying it too fast. At times, “Sugaaskkodesu” or “Sugayaskkodesu” is usually what comes out. She has been asked to repeat her name on TV programs, and was also criticized for it on the final episode of Gyao’s Hello Pro Hour.
  • Along with Yajima Maimi, she is one of two Hello! Project Kids with substantial magazine presence.
  • Because of the meaning of her name, she’s the Chinese pear of the group. She and Tsugunaga Momoko are the only Berryz members with fruits in their names.
  • Although she’s the youngest member of Berryz, she’s one of the most mature of the group.
  • On Hello! Project 2010 Winter concert, there was a survey among all the H!P members about who has the most beautiful lips: she got the 4th position.
  • She doesn’t like to ride vehicles. The first time she rode a plane was for a movie on Yamaguchi with Kumai Yurina and Okai Chisato (she was on her 3rd year of elementary school), she felt really scared. When she was little, she used to get sick while riding cars or trains, but now she’s fine with them, although she still isn’t able to get used to airplanes, they’re really scary for her because of how the plane shakes while its taking off and landing. Once time the plane shook so violently, she tought she was going to die, she even began to cry and also started to overbreath. She thinks that people who aren’t good with roller coasters probably don’t like planes either, but Tsugunaga Momoko (who can’t stand roller coasters either) is fine with planes. She can’t sleep on planes (only if it’s long overseas trip, since she finally gets tired and ends up sleeping).
  • In her 4th solo event, she mostly chose ballad songs thinking about it’ll be hard for the fans to be standing all the time. The most difficult song to sing in the list is “Suna wo Kamu You ni…NAMIDA”.
  • [2010.01] Nation Junior Magazine (Thailand)
