Ishiguro Aya’s Profile


Ishiguro Aya auditioned to become the lead singer of Sharan Q in 1997. Though she lost to Michiyo Heike, Tsunku offered her and four other runners-up the chance to form a new girl group if they could sell 50,000 CDs of their debut song “Ai no Tane” within five days. They succeded and Ishiguro, along with Nakazawa Yuko, Iida Kaori, Abe Natsumi and Fukuda Asuka, formed the first generation of Morning Musume.

She graduated from both Morning Musume and Hello! Project on January 7, 2000, and married Yamada Shinya in May 2000. They have three children and Ishiguro has written two books about motherhood. She also makes occasional television appearances.

  • She changed her name to “Yamada Aya” after she was married, and the character for “Aya” (彩) was later changed to two different characters (亜弥).
  • Contrary to popular rumor, Aya was not pregnant when she left MM. She officially resigned in December of 1999 with her last public performance with the group in January of 2000. She was however pregnant when she married her boyfriend the former drummer of Luna Sea Yamada Shinya. Her daughter was born in November almost a full year after she announced that she was leaving the group.
